Wrath help needed 'Smart Casual' wtf does that mean?

It's the dress code for the Work Christmas bash in a hotel.
Usually it's a black tie thing, so nice and easy.
But 'smart casual'??
I don't want to wear a suit as will basically look like I do on a work day. Same really if I wear a pair of trousers and a shirt.

Are jeans acceptable? I would think even a decent pair with nice pair of shoes would make me look under dressed, given that women are going on about new party dresses they're going to buy.
