I think the answer must be this:

it's a good appointment if we win the league; it's a bad appointment otherwise, if things go wrong; so we'll wait til the end, see if it all turns out absolutely perfectly, and if not we'll moan and blame the board for not being able to fix and/or foretell all future events like what we all can ....
