CITY are delighted to confirm Mike Phelan will return to the Club on Wednesday to join Neil Adams' backroom team as First Team Coach, working alongside Gary Holt.

Former City captain Phelan, now 52, was Assistant Manager of Manchester United from 2008 until he departed after Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

During that time United won three Premier League titles, the Club World Cup, two League Cups and reached two finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Phelan was a coach working with Gary Megson at Norwich in 1995 and also managed the Club's reserve team. He later held coaching roles at Blackpool and Stockport before moving to Old Trafford in 1999 to join their Centre of Excellence.

City boss Neil Adams said: "It's really important that we replaced Mark Robson with the best possible coach we could find and I decided Mike was the outstanding choice.

"I'm delighted to bring in someone with Mike's experience to work with myself, Gary Holt, and the rest of the coaching staff. He's someone who has a strong connection with Norwich City and I know him well, having worked with him before when I was a player and he was coaching here."

Phelan, who starts his new role with the Canaries on Wednesday, said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to return to Carrow Road. I have many fond memories and am looking forward to helping Neil and the team to progress and ultimately getting back into the Premier League where they deserve to be."

Phelan was voted into the Norwich City Hall of Fame in 2002.

As a cultured and versatile midfielder and former Captain of the Club, Phelan made 194 appearances for City between 1985 and 1989, scoring 10 goals.

He was a key figure as the Club won the second division title in 1986 and then skippered the Canaries as they finished fifth and fourth in the top flight in 1987 and 1989.

Phelan left to join Manchester United for ?750,000 in 1989 and went on to win a number of honours as a player for the Red Devils, including the Premier League title, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup.
