As I understand it

It turns out Hughton was a great manager and Bassong had an outstanding season last season, whilst Elliott Bennett was tearing Premier League defences apart with his incisive wing play.
I missed all that, so could someone who didn't explain how we went down rather than qualifying for the Champions League?
