They are effective, perhaps mainly because despite all the stick he got Maclaren when England manager is a top manager at this level who knows how to eke out results in all types of games.
By the likes of Cardiff I mean teams we had started to leave behind and for whom the gap should have been too much to make up without a monumental run of form from them and a collapse by us.
If you open up a decent gap on one of your supposed rivals you want to maintain it not allow it to be eroded almost completely during a period where you have a run of relatively easy games. That's all I meant.
