can't have totally secret justice

Even if they can't report classified material, journalists are vital in being able to demonstrate that we have an open & fair justice system.

Otherise you're in the position of the State being able to put people on trial without anyone ever being able to report that they at least witnessed it - how would anyone know that someone who gets carted off to prison hadn't actually been found not guilty?

(A very extreme and unrealistic example, but hopefully you get my point)

It's a bit like that famous Falkands War news report - 'I counted them out and I counted them all back'.

We have 10 witnesses to an otherwise secret trial that can at least say 'I was there and nothing untoward seemed to happen'.
