The thing is, I can see why it works for the NFL

They are trying to expand their game to a global market starting with a place where there is already a significant knowledgeable audience. The Wembley games are profitable but there is a bigger picture for them.

But the EPL is already popular just about everywhere so this is just naked shameless greed.
