There were two choices

Either we paid him 3 months wages (probably to do nothing), or Watford paid him 3 months wages (presumably to pay for them).

That's the trade-off. We've strengthened a rival for 3m, and strengthened our finances. Overall result for us will come down to what we do with that money, and whether the points he gains them (which will come from other teams - not us) ends up costing us anything.
