OK, when I said 'no-one', guess I really meant 'many fewer people than used to'

suspect there's an adverse selection problem here - the fewer 'ordinary' people that do it, the higher proportion of hitchhikers are desperate / slight nutters, hence the fewer 'normal' drivers are willing to pick them up, hence fewer non-desperate people are willing to do it, hence the proportion of desperate / nutter hitchhikers goes up further etc etc etc...
