What would Asda have to loose by making it explicitly clear how much more expensive the pre-packed bananas are? Quite simply - profit. Even though pre-packed banana sales are lower than that of loose in Asda, across all of it's stores, nationwide, you are still talking a heck of a lot of pre-packed bananas sold per week.

I am only citing Asda here as this is what the article was about, and I don't doubt that other supermarkets do similar.
