Hmmm, I think that (spoilers)

the radicalisation he underwent would have been entirely reversible once he was back on US soil. And maybe it takes being a few seconds from blowing yourself and several others to smithereens to finally admit to yourself that you've done a u turn in your beliefs.
For me, seasons 2 and 3 were the ones that dragged the whole Brody stuff on for too long. As I say, we've had a reboot of sorts for season 4 so I'll give it a chance
