if they want more first team football you'd think it would occur to them to look good when they did get a game.

Personally I don't think it's mainly motivation but lack of playing time together. Football is a team game. The regular first team have forged an understanding by playing together - last night's XI haven't, which makes them less than the sum of their parts...
