Impossible to say. Take Qu?bec.

They had an independence referendum in 1995 and the 'no' campaign won by a tiny margin, much smaller than yesterday. But there was never a second vote and now, nearly 20 years later, the Qu?becois nationalists are polling at only a few percent. I think such a referendum can be so politically divisive and intense that nationalism could be exhausted for a while. No one can say.
