I agree, a real shame especially as it's now hors categorie but

It comes down to the councils who're willing to pay. Norfolk CC councillors bottled it when they were criticised for the cost of staging it a few years back. Even though the benefit to the local economy far out-weighed the cost. Incidentally the cost of putting on the TDF in Yorkshire was about ?20 million (?4.5 for Yorkshire councils) and the estimated benefit to the region is ?100 million. But I love my cycling so I'm biased.
