I had a Sony Vaio do that. Screen would flicker when first turned on

then sort itself out. Got progressively worse until it eventually died. The laptop itself still worked, so I was able to attach a monitor to it, but the screen never recovered. Sony wanted about ?250 to fix it (8/9 yrs ago) which we thought was a bit steep, so never bothered.
