Lactose intolerance (aka "dairy intolerance") isn't made up Proth.

I'm as scornful as the next man about faddy made-up intolerances, but lactose intolerance is real.

The majority of mammals, many humans included, lose the ability to digest lactose in infancy. The evolutionary explanation of that is that it frees up the mother's milk for the next younger sibling that comes along, if each infant loses the ability to process the sugars in milk. At least that's the theory.

In the west we generally share a genetic trait which means that we don't stop producing the enzyme lastase in infancy, like most other mammals, meaning we can process lactose through adolescence and into adulthood.

It's why far-easterners who generally don't share that genetic trait with us, and therefore have less lactase as adults, and cannot process lactose (i.e. are dairy intolerant) say that we smell of milk.

I'm not lactose intolerant btw, I f**king live for cheese.
