If you work from home...

say you have eight rooms and you use one room for work then you can claim one eighth of you household bills against tax - that's mortgage, gas, electric, insurance, water, council tax (i think). I'm not sure I ever had to tell them what room I worked from though.
Do your tax return yourself online - simple and I've never had one queried in any way.
