what was the alternative?

he is in the last year of his contract, and I very much doubt he is interested in signing a new one. So selling now is the 'best' option - the alternative is probably to have him mooching about in a disinterested half fit state for another year (picking up pretty decent wages for it I suspect) and then leaving for nothing next summer.
Sometimes in football you are left with two less-than-ideal choices and have to opt for the least disagreeable one...
