I think it's reasonable, personally

You field a player who isn't available, you lose the game. Otherwise there's always an incentive to try and sneak one in and hope no-one notices. And you can't start graduating that according to how many minutes they played, what the score was at the time etc. Just keep it simple - you do it, you lose.
