yes, it was a mistake and as I said above, the only radar contacts they would have seen, if they saw any, could have been just that with no other information available.

Each individual missile also has its own integral radar, so its quite possible that having fired the missile, its radar picked up and locked onto to the first contact it came across which happened to be MH17.

This is also on the Ukrainians for not closing this particular part of their airspace, but they need the cash!
BA haven't been flying over eastern Ukraine for several weeks, so the Malaysian Airlines are partly to blame as well.
