you are correct it was captured from Ukraine Army

by rebels armed to the teeth by Russia and backed by Russian army.

You are also correct it was a mistake - in a way. They deliberately launched the missile but thought the plane was a military one.

they have just shot down 2 Ukrainian fighter jets now too. Rebels would not know how to use such sophisticated equipment without trained soldiers showing them what to do.
