I read a really good "explain the Israel/Palestine problem in really simple words" article recently - I'll dig it out.

Basically, there's not ever going to be a lasting peace - just an endless cycle of quiet years, then short frantic periods of obscene violence, then repeat. And it's no good just blaming religion or religious fanatics - it's much broader than just that.
