Webhosting - advice please!

I'm looking to set up a website to advertise something me and my mates are doing to raise money for charidee, and I'm looking for advice on any good webhosting companies, preferable cheap / free! I don't mind a bit of advertising on there but I really don't want to be using Geocities or Angelfire or any of the old ones that were around when I was making websites as a kid.

Any ideas?!
