I don't get the tackling argument

Tackling is part of the game - there's always the mitigation that they were just reckless.

Biting has mens rea, it's an intentional act which has no part of the game. If I bit colleagues at work I'd be sacked. If I bit someone in the street, that's assault and I could be arrested.

I think in certain ways he's got off lightly. It's appalling that he seems to feel no culpability and that those around him try to defend it.
