i've both a pi and chromecast

for youtube, netflix, music the chromecast cannot be beaten for ease of use.

i always punch netflix through to it from both laptop and phone, works flawlessly. As a caveat you may need to be using chrome on the pc for it to have the send to chromecast feature, but thats no big deal (dont use FF or IE so dont know!).

i will add that the raspberry pi is also amazing. but its not even in the same sport let alone ball park when it comes to ease of use.

to install xbmc or raspbmc (the OS) is ok to do But you then need to potentially set up the network (something you dont really need to do on the CC).

then to do anything meaningful (download streams etc) you need to plug in extensions which you have to follow how tos on the tinterweb.
