I drive a beat-up old 3-series. Disadvantage, everyone thinks I'm a c**t because I'm in a beemer. Advantages, it wasn't expensive (I bought it when it was 6 years old for about ?6k), look after them and they last forever (apart from consumables like oil, brake fluid, discs, pads, windscreen wipers, tyres etc never needed a part for it and never had a thing go wrong and I've done a fair few miles) - still got it, it's now 12 years old and worth a grand tops but see no reason to change it, it's reliable and comfortable. It does about 50 to the gallon (diesel - it's a 320d), less with lots of town driving obviously. Goes a good speed on the motorway, very comfortable in good or bad conditions, enough acceleration to get round slow stuff on difficult roads where you don't get many chances to overtake.
Thing is with any of the German makes the older ones are still good cars, though mine is about three body shapes "old" for a 3-series now (but I don't care). New/nearly new are ridiculously dear and lose value fast; but once they've lost that value they're good cars for the money, in my book at least.
