I think that award is more relevant than the ballon d'or.

Nedved won the ballon, FFS. Beckham and Gerrard have been second. You can't argue that that makes them the second best players in the world that year - or that Nedved was the best, 'cos that just isn't true. It's a subjectively judged reward for a good season or being in the news a lot. (Well, in my opinion.)

However, your comments don't really tackle my points down below.
