well, Ronaldo won the ballon d'or twice, to Zidane's once. Including in '97, when ZZ was surely close to his prime (and came third).

You may disagree, but suggests there was a time - near the peak of both their careers - when the footballing establishment did think Ronaldo was as good or better than ZZ. (That must have been after his miracle season for Barca that I mentioned below, incidentally.)

Not saying Ronaldo was better. Just that's not open and shut that he wasn't.
