Nononononononononono nononono.

In 2006 Zidane came back from retirement, took the team almost singlehandedly to the final, gave them the lead, and was the best player in the tournament. In 1998 best player in the tournament, in a better team.

Ronaldo was the best player in 2002, granted, but Zidane was injured. It was generally a weaker tournament, I think, and the opponents in the final were a weak Germany who only two years previously had been the only team worse than England in the Euros, which in itself should have got an award.

Flawed genius? Ronaldo's moment: not appearing in the final. Zidane's: scoring and getting a red card for a headbutt. Which would you rather have done?

Their careers overlapped pretty much. I don't think there is any time at which Ronaldo would have been considered the better all round player, worthy of being mentioned in the same company as Pele or Maradona.
