we only realised we "had" to go for wins with 4-5 games left

Sunderland were in a position where they had to do that with 10-15 games games left.
Add that to the fact that they were actually playing quite well prior to that and failing to pick up wins, while we were playing quite badly and picking up enough points to give the illusion that we would probably be safe and you have two very different situations
