Sadly, this is the case.

An awful lot of us said at the time, unless he got a great start, he was doomed from the start. Simply because he was following Lambert. Add to that a different, far more negative (therefore less pleasing) style. And finally, add a first game utter humping against Fulham, and it makes you wonder how he lasted so long.

A lot of what bigfeller said earlier is true - rightly or wrongly he never got even close to being loved, indeed he barely got to liked. And at a personal level I feel really bad for him for that, because character-wise, integrity-wise, he appears to be ten times the man Lambert is.
