I don't think it's ignorance

I think it was meant as a joke joshing around with his mates and all part of his anti-PC schtick. Ill-judged and stupid, but he deliberately mumbled it because he knows it's wrong to say it, kind of like "I know I can't say this bit".

I personally don't think it's a sacking offence, and it doesn't prove "racism", but as May said "he's a monumental bellend".
