Locked door to stop the dog getting into the rest of the house, food removed from kitchen to stop it raiding the cupbaords whilst she wasn't home. Makes sense.
She was feeding it daily until she went on crutches. Does seem like simple neglect, although clearly some mentail issues going on if she refused help / didn't bother calling a rescue centre to re-home it.
Quite frankly my biggest surprise about this case is that someone from that part of Bristol ever became a trainee solicitor in the first place.
