This Worthington 12 month rolling contract lark

Given that we have to give Worthington 12 month's notice that his contract won't be renewed, or we owe him a year's salary - could he already had his notice given, and he will be gone next June - and no one will say because it would be ridiculous to have a manager working when he was effectively already sacked? Is this a possibility? Could this have actually happen?
