still acquiring, at an exponential rate) is tens of orders of magnitude more effective than that available in previous societies.

Energy is the key. Enough energy & you can do anything (the biomass of the planet is a vanishingly small fraction of the total planetary mass).

All we need is fusion power to be perfected ............

BUT we can still anihalate ourselves, or the environment can arbitrarily flip, as it has so often does, & wipe us out. Our physical power is still puny against the might of the inanimate world.

As far as inequality goes, that only mattered when there wasn't enough to go round. Nowadays we've got stuff coming out of our ears, but we haven't got a sensible way to distribute it, now we don't have any jobs.
