But I've had absolutely no time for him since I read a hagiographic piece about him in the Observer (c 1980 as I recall).
Much play was given to his renouncing his title; unfortunately he didn't renounce all the trappings of money & privilege that went with it.
In the interview with him, he came across as sanctimonious & patronising (to me anyway, & I had no particular opinion about him beforehand). I have seen nothing since to change my opinion.
Before you dismiss me as some dyed-in -the-wool Tory Scum, I would add that I have read all George Orwell's works, including his political essays, & he remains one of the men I admire the most.
I also saw part of an interview with Eric Hobsbawm shortly before he died. I'd never taken much notice of him, but he seemed to be a sensible, level headed & intelligent chap. I actually think Marx was right on a lot of things.
But I do abhor hypocrisy.
