Hello Wroth techy iPhone people. Please don't judge me for this question

(I have a different skill set that's all).

I have an old 3G iPhone which I have not updated in the last systems update (ios7?). Frankly I don't like the look of it and I'm not keen on change at the best of times. (Hoots in).

Now it's telling me there is a security update for ios6 (I've been reading that there's a security problem on iPhones) Do I go with the update? Can I be sure it won't sneakily switch it to ios7 when I'm not looking? Has anyone done this update? I would quite like to get rid of the red notification circle. It bothers me.
