most teams have bigger budgets and better players than us.

By definition if you have two teams playing equally to their potential than the team with better players will win.

Our league position probably currently equates pretty much to our position in the payroll table which suggests that we play to our potential about as frequently as everyone else (the last two seasons we clearly reached our potential, i.e. played well, more than most teams and hence finished above our payroll level)
