In the 90s he was well respected as a boss. I remember the match versus Italy when we needed a draw to qualify for 98 and he got the tactics spot on. Versus Argentina he got it spot on. We almost went 3-1 up in the first half. Argentina had barely conceded a goal during qualifying for that year's World Cup. Scholes I think it was who just missed in the 6 yard box.
