just guessing really but I'd imagine

any owner that is able to pump millions into a club is able to structure their tax affairs so that losses made on the footballing side cancel out gains made in other investments/income generating businesses (so HMRC effectively subsidises the footballing side through a reduction in the overall tax bill for that individual).
