You say you don't like wasting money on the day

Staying in and spending time with your wide costs nothing. Going out with your mates and coming back late from the pub says that you would rather waste money down the pub with your mates than waste it on her, so I can see why she'd be annoyed.

It's one day of the year and it's not there to remind you how much you love her, it's to remind her how much you love her. You don't have to buy each other presents but if staying at home on one night is a monumental effort for you, she's entitled to be annoyed. It's fair enough to say you don't like valentines day but valentines day probably wasn't the best time to say it.
