You're suggesting they don't already have (part-time) jobs to pay the bills

Most have to as there's little to money in the music industry at their level. Few can do it full-time but then that means acting as a glorified jukebox doing covers at weddings etc as that's what pays, sadly (rather than writing their own original material). As a consumer it's now the norm to expect free streaming or free (legal) downloads, so if people can get hold of big name artists stuff for free (legally or otherwise) why would they then pay a couple of quid for some unknown local artist's EP on Bandcamp? That's the distinction I was driving at last night ie. it all has a knock-on effect. I'm not keen on stuff like Spotify either as they give a pittance per play to the artists. The only benefit of these and social media sharing is the exposure but it's still hard to be heard amongst the tens of thousands of others trying to do the same with the big dogs having the advertising clout to drown them out with blanket coverage.
