it was as a reaction to the board's clear fondness and admiration for the man.

As for it being obvious, that's not a point I feel the need to make. I had a girlfriend once who used to argue that just because something was obvious to *me*, that didn't mean that it should also be obvious to *her*. The fact, as I tried to explain, is that what is obvious, is, wel, obvious. It's the not-rating-his-own-signings thing that caps it off for me.
