We lost the game, is there something you don't get about football?

The team we were playing were bottom, we didn't bother controlling tghe game when we were winning and only bothered trying when we were losing. We could try something to change that. They; the bottom club, were all over us for an hour, and when they went ahead it took us 15 minutes to change anything.
