I'm still backing the manager because there's a principle at stake

the manager is in charge of players, that's how the club should work.

You might want a different manager in charge but while one is in charge you have to back his right to make the choices regarding playing staff (else you have anarchy, and how can you be in a position to judge him?). No exceptions for anyone.
