if we assume the limit of our ambition (at least until we can pay much larger wages) is to finish 8th/9th.

Because that is such an unfulfilling existence, there comes a point when style becomes more important than results. Teams like Fulham and Wigan seemed to reach the point when they decided to prioritise entertainment. Stoke are trying it, Bolton and Charlton also tried it.

The problem is, all of these teams became worse as a result of abandoning their pragmatism. Not many examples of teams that have done well by trying to be more entertaining - which, for me, is a very sad indictment of the league.
