It might be the case

Everyone's making excuses for him, but it might just be that he isn't actually that good. You could just as easily say he's slow, weak, has possibly the worst shot ever seen on an attacking player and takes too long on the ball, which given the current vogue for packed central midfields means he gets caught in possession too much.

That would be rather exceedingly harsh on him, of course, but there's about as much truth in it as in this ridiculous claim that he's some sort of invaluable Premier League genius who is being somehow stifled by our style of play and lack of games. If he is being 'stifled' it is far more by other teams style of play than by ours (and because it is quite easy to do)
