The contract didn't guarantee he would play (if it did he would have simply exercised a clause in it and leave). All footballers know things aren't guaranteed and have to weigh that up (against security of income) when deciding on a contract length.

We are completely within our rights to keep hold of him and it seems eminently sensible not to sell to one of our rivals mid-season.
