Because she clearly lied to the police originally

That's obviously not to say she killed him but certainly knew something happened and he hadn't just disappeared in the night. Doesn't look great for her when she's detained immediately after being told her son is dead either.

Anyway the mother is connected to the case a fair bit more than a stranger who lives nearby when the body is found at another family members
