Having two babies is expensive!
Can't comment personally on the age gap, but we have 6 month old twins and two babies that are utterly dependent on you means lots of planning and hard work. Doesn't leave a lot of time for other things. Lots of stuff that is dead simple to do with one baby (eg a quick shopping trip into town, even just going for a coffee), suddenly becomes a fully planned out mission. On many occasion I've wished one of them was old enough to walk / do things for themselves / not require such a massive f**king buggy. But at least I don't generally have to worry about where the older one has crawled/toddled off to whilst changing the younger one's nappy - that would give me (more) grey hair...
Friends of ours had twins when their eldest was two - I think they found it 'challenging' and needed lots of parental support but, now they are older, that's a nice gap.
Brother-in-law had two girls 12 months apart and the eldest got shoved into childcare as soon as they could - thus missing out on a lot of those great baby years and having lots of her 'firsts' described to them by nursery staff. Very sad (but in this case that was down to the parents more than anything else).
Biggest factor, I suspect, is how broody your wife/partner is. I'm not sure I can hold out for another 3-4 years of "I miss being pregnant. When do you think we should have another baby??" Aaargh!
